Milena Plebs

Milena Plebs has been described as the "most significant female Argentine tango dancer of our time". She has been at the forefront of tango choreography and teaching and is a hugely popular star at workshops, festivals and performances around the world.

She writes a regular column for El Tanguata, the online tango magazine that is a fantastic resource for visitors to Buenos Aires.Milena's articles are translated into English. About teaching tango she writes in her article headed 'Quality Control' "I don't agree with a unified code of teaching...If we all did the salida, the ochos, etc. in the same way... the dance would turn monotous and boring." In her article on technique she wonders why technique classes are so much more important to women than men. She writes: "But the male role in the dance of tango is the most complex one. ...Perhaps it would also be advisable for them to have individual training to expand their physical capacities in the responsibility of leading."

It may be re-assuring to know that even Milena has been to unsatisfactory milongas. On the invitation to dance at a milonga, where she says, that on some nights''there are no men that ask us to dance"! she says ''success in this enterprise has a lot to do with intention. Though there are always external or imponderable factors that can complicate the possibility todance, attitude plays a fundamental role."!

Milena's credentials include

  • creating the Tango x 2 Company with Miguel Zotto. This company presented critically acclaimed shows such as TangoX2 (1990), Perfumes de Tango (1993) and Una Noche de Tango (1996).
  • Starring in the documentary "Milena baile el tango...con Ezequiel Farfaro'', directed by Rodrigo Peiretti in 1995
  • winning a number of awards including Italy's Premio Gino Tanni (1998), and the Maria Ruanova 91, the highest award to Argentine dance.
  • She will be among the Tango Stars at the Festival Tango con las Estrellas to be held in Buenos Aires from 25 January to 2 February 2009.
