Club Gricel is one milonga that most tangueros have heard of - and one that they head for when they visit Buenos Aires. Organised by Hector Chidichimo for 17 years, its trademark is the neon sign spelling out the words.
Like so many of his age Hector started dancing in his early teens practising with other boys and men until he felt confident to dance at a milonga and hasn't stopped - he is now in his 80s. He is credited as inventing the traispie which he says came about when he decided to dance milonga in jazz time.
Club Gricel was established by Hector in what was a run-down room with no plumbing and no furniture. An initial rent-free period gave him the chance he needed to renovate the space and it has gone on to become one of the most popular venues in BA.
Hector's partners include Geraldine Rojas, Natalia Hills, Alejandra Mantinan, Virginia Martora and Guillermina Quiroga.
This is a video of Hector dancing to Pugliese's "La Mariposa" with Virginia Martora at the 16th anniversary milonga at Club Gricel.
You will find Club Gricel running different milongas 5 nights a week at
La Rioja 1180, Buenos Aires
