La Yumba is one of the most recognised and loved tango pieces - it was composed in 1946 by Osvaldo Pugliese whose tango has such a distinctive and commanding presence. This clip begins with a performance by the great bandoneonista Daniel Binelli then moves into a clip from the 1940s. It shows a milonga with Pugliese's orchestra performing La Yumba and gives a true feeling of what it must have been like to dance while the great maestro and his musicians performed La Yumba and many of the other great Pugliese classics. There is some dispute about whether this is 1946 or 1948.
Pugliese formed his orchestra in 1939 and maintained it until 1968, when six of the musicians from the orchestra left to form Sexteto Tango. He re-grouped in 1970. There are many Pugliese CDs but if you were looking for just one go for Auscencia otherwise the CD box set Edicion Aniversario is wonderful! Comments (0)
