I want to learn to dance tango, where do I start? |

Thursday, 16 April 2009 |
This is a question frequently asked of TangoAustralia. We don't teach tango so we are not pushing anyone's barrow, however we do provide a Directory of Tango Schools. Any Tango School in Australia can publish the basic details of their school here free of charge. For a very small cost they can tell you a bit more about themselves. (We charge to cover costs). So we would recommend that you start here.
If you can't find a school near you in this listing we suggest you go to the Links pages. All tango schools with a website are listed here. This listing will remain until the end of 2009 by which time we hope all the tango schools will have subscribed to the Directory.
Once you have found a school you can search their name on TangoAustralia and you may find a milonga (dance night) which is run by the school, or an article on the school or one of the school's events. This will help you to know more about them.
You can also check the Newsletters for stories on the schools.
Take a casual beginner's class to begin with, then if you don't like the school you are free to try another without losing your money. As with anything you will find you click with one teacher where you don't with another.

Q. My sister is a passionate tango dancer in Germany.
It is her birthday soon and I thought about some Australian Tango music. I am not sure if that even exists, but I am sure if someone knows, then you guys.
Would you please be able to point me in the right direction?

Milonga Manners: How do I get a dance without actually asking ? |
|

I have been learning tango for about four months and recently went to my first milonga. (I danced salsa for four years so I was used to going to dances). I sat and waited for someone to dance with me most of the night until luckily one guy, who I go to class with, asked me to dance. Otherwise I would have sat all night. It seems that the people who have been going for a long time all have regular partners and I don't seem to be able to be using the right signals. What can I do?

Where can I buy tango shoes? |

We are beginner dancers, man and woman, and have been dancing for about three months in street shoes with leather soles. We have noticed some beautiful shoes on the dance floors and would like to know where we can buy these shoes. What should we be looking for in a pair of tango shoes? Also we have noticed some of the teachers wearing what look like dancing sneakers, where do we get these?
